These views were expressed by Saqib Akbar, chairman Al-Basirah, an Islamabad-based academic and research centre, during a meeting held here under the auspices of Majlis-e-Basirat on Thursday. The topic of the meeting was ‘Democracy and Islam’.
Saqib Akbar said that the Quran and Sunnah provide the basic guidance in this respect. He said that Islam does not preseent any specific model of governance and that people can form the government according to their needs. He further said some extremists give false impression that they don’t need constitution.
Prof Dr Muhammad Tufail, an eminent intellectual, said that legislation in conflict with the Quran and Sunnah can’t be done. He said we can benefit from the principles of Ijma (consensus of opinions) and Qiyas (analogy) to enact laws.
Allama Naeemul Hasan said that Imam Khomeini’s doctrine of Vilayat-e-Faqih is the establishment of the system of governance under the guardianship of a Faqih (jurist). He said that research is being done on this concept throughout the world.
Dr. Irfan Shehzad said that in view of their collective needs, human beings themselves started to vest their own authority to their elected representatives and that this practice began from the era of cultivation. He said that Islam commands to vest this authority with fairness and justice.
Dr. Murtaza Mughal, Dr Aun Sajid, Maulana Mohammad Jan, Maulana Tahmid Jan, Shehbaz Ali Abbasi, Maulana Hammadullah Laghari, Dr. Nadeem Abbas Baloch, Mohsin Raza Hashimi, Nasir Ali Saleem, Qamar Naqib Khan, Baig Raj and others also spoke on the occasion. A large number of teachers, lawyers, intellectuals and religious scholars attended this academic gathering. It is worth mentioning that Albasirah has been holding these academic discussions under the auspices of Majlis-e-Basirat and that these meetings are being attended by a large number of scholarly people hailing from different fields of life.
At the end, a memorandum was presented unanimously in which people of Pakistan were asked to massively take part in the ongoing electoral process.
